Music Video Research: It's Time - Imagine Dragons

I studied this video for research as it has a very similar mood and style to the song we have chosen to use for our video and so many ideas can be drawn from it despite the differing genre.
Key Points:
  • Focus heavily on the band members
  • Dark, deserted wasteland
  • 4 Band members walking through the darkness
  • Suggestions of soldiering on in our darkest times
  • All they have is each other in the seemingly unending darkness
  • Surrounded by destruction such as the boat, desolated landscape
  • Reach location and withdrawing some sort of glowing object - Light in the darkness
  • Source of light no matter how dark times may seem, simply have to find it
  • Some form of explosion triggers from where the light source was buried, cures the darkness and returns the world to light.
  • Band members appear to have given their lives to cure the darkness.
  • So long as we can find light we can escape any situation no matter how dark
  • Setting reflects heavily on the theme of the song but as the song advances so does the video, when the song’s pace picks up the source of light is revealed as we reach the pinnacle of the story as the “disease” of darkness is cured.

Video Evaluation:
This video uses setting heavily in order to match up and provide context for the song itself. The video begins by showing us the members of the band with little in the background other than a very dark sky. This sets the scene for the music and introduces the general theme of the song as we see these characters consumed by darkness.
In the next shot we are shown the true nature of the devastated landscape as the 4 band members walk along alone. The landscape seems completely destroyed and abandoned and the skies are dark and grey helping to further set the mood of the song.
We continue following the band through the desolated landscape passing various destroyed objects such as a wrecked boat emphasising how dark things have become to fit in with how the song has been about bad experiences so far until the song begins to pick up a happier mood and in the video a very small but very bright source of light is revealed signifying how a simple change can make all the difference.
The band members then bury this light and run fearing what may happen next as some form of energy flies out of the ground and consumes the darkness possibly suggesting this small piece of light is a small piece of hope, a seed waiting to be planted but that once planted and nurtured it will grow into a full plant and in this sense the small piece of hope will cure the darkness in the end.
