Burn my Shadow - Unkle
One song we found that we felt would make for a good music video is Burn my Shadow by Unkle.
One song we found that we felt would make for a good music video is Burn my Shadow by Unkle.
The existing music video shows a short segment of a film and so no typical music video exists. This meant the song became a runner up for our choice of song for our own music video however not much could be learnt from the video itself in terms of typical music videos. However it does show how even within the length of a song a story can be told.
Music Only:
Official Video (Some of the song is obscured):
This video shows a different form of music video. The music is very suitable for the kind of video we were planning on making. The music changed pace at various intervals which it useful for presenting a significant change in the story of the video such as if something bad happens the music becomes louder and faster and other such concepts.
However we found the official video to not be very useful, instead of the average music video it used a short film as the video for the music and while the theme was similar between the video and the song it did not show common conventions such as the music and video following the same pace, being synchronized etc and instead felt as if the film and music were made separately, which they likely were, and placed on each other due to the same theme. While the song was useful in giving us an idea what we want to do and the video appears to be a reasonable short film, we decided the 2 combined did not work well at least for our aim and so decided to go for a more conventional music video style.
Key Points
- Very clear beat - Allows much easier pacing and synchronization
- Loud beat - Synchronize shot changes with the beat, very effective in music videos.
- Drifts between fast paced and slow. Varying emotions presented in the video.
- Begins medium paced, set the main pace for the rest of the video.
- Drift into very slow calm music, primarily singing with slight beat to portray emotions. Sadness
- Drift back into medium paced music - Signifies the start of the main chunk of the music.
- Again drops to silence - Suggest something wrong.
- Music becomes much louder and faster - Dark side of the song. Anger/Breakdown.
- Varying paces provides opportunity to create a story within the video while sticking to the general music video theme. Show variety of emotions in a short space of time.
